Mihkelson to head foreign affairs, Hanso to head national defense committee
The Foreign Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu elected Marko Mihkelson (IRL) as its chairman and former Minister of Foreign Affairs Keit Pentus-Rosimannus (Reform) as deputy chair, while the National Defence Committee elected former Minister of Defence Hannes Hanso (SDE) as its chairman and Mart Helme (EKRE) as its deputy chair.
Mihkelson, a member of junior coalition party Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL) and Pentus-Rosimannus, a member of the opposition Reform Party, were both nominated for the position of committee chairman. Mihkelson received six votes, while Pentus-Rosimannus received five, spokespeople for the Riigikogu reported.
Other members of the Foreign Affairs Committee include Vladimir Velman (Center), Enn Eesmaa (Center), Marko Šorin (Center), Liisa Oviir (SDE), Kalle Muuli (IRL), Anne Sulling (Reform), Eerik-Niiles Kross (Reform), Henn Põllu (EKRE) and Andres Herkel (Free).
In the vote for chairman of the National Defence Committee, Hanso, a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDE), was supported by eight and Helme, a member of the Conservative People's Party of Estonia (EKRE), by three members of the committee, Riigikogu spokespeople reported.
Other members of the defense committee include Oudekki Loone (Center); Andrei Novikov (Center), Tiit Terik (Center), Marianne Mikko (SDE), Ants Laaneots (Reform), Johannes Kert (Reform); Madis Milling (Reform), Juhan Parts (IRL) and Ain Lutsepp (Free).
