East Prefecture loosens restrictions on Lake Peipus ice access
As of yesterday, East Prefecture police are once again allowing people to head out onto the ice on Lake Peipus in the entire Ida-Viru County region, both by foot and on all-terrain vehicles, up to a distance of five kilometers (three miles) from the shore.
Approaching within 500 meters (just under one third of a mile) of stream or river mouths or within two kilometers (one and a quarter of a mile) of the headwaters of the Narva River remains prohibited.
According to Indrek Püvi, head of the East Prefecture’s Border Guard Office, ice conditions were good at the moment, however they can change quickly due to unpredictable weather, and so it remains important that people remain vigilant while moving on the ice, particularly within the vicinity of any stream or river mouths.
“We ask that anyone encountering dangerous spots with open water and cracks in the ice within areas where access to the ice is permitted immediately notify the nearest guard station,” said Püvi.
