Liia Hänni to become adviser to President Kaljulaid

Former politician, public figure and e-democracy expert Liia Hänni has been invited by President Kersti Kaljulaid to join her team as an adviser to the president. Hänni's areas of responsibility will include education, research, information society and democracy-related questions.

For the past 11 years, Hänni has been director of the e-Governance Academy's e-democracy program whose goal is is to improve and renew the democractic mechanisms of society and state administration with the help of information and communications technology. Hänni is also actively involved in the third sector.

Liia Hänni graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in physics. She was deeply involved in the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Estonia as a member of related work groups and the chairman of the Revision Panel of th Constitutional Assembly.

Hänni was elected as a representative of both the Estonian Supreme Soviet and the Congress of Estonia in 1990, and became a member of the August 20 Club upon being one of the members of the Estonian Supreme Soviet to vote for the restoration of the Republic of Estonia's independence on Aug. 20, 1991.

Hänni also worked as MP from 1992-1999 in the VII, VIII and IX Riigikogu, and from 1992-1995 she was also the minister respnsible for the carrying out of the nationwide ownership reform.

Hänni was awarded the Order of the National Coat of Arms, 2nd Class in 2006.
