Explosions in Brussels: Ministry of Foreign Affairs says avoid travel to, public transport in Brussels
Following a number of explosions in the airport and metro system in the city, the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is recommending avoiding travel to Brussels, and is advising those in Brussels to avoid public transport and other crowded places.
Two explosions occurred in Brussels Zaventem Airport, 11 kilometers (7 miles) northeast of Brussels, at approximately 8 a.m. local time this morning, followed an hour later by an explosion in Maalbeek metro station, close to the EU institutions. An unconfirmed number of deaths and casualties have been reported.
Both the airport and the entire metro system in Brussels have been shut down, and Belgian authorities have raised the terror alert level to its highest level.
According to information received by the ministry, further attacks cannot currently be ruled out.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends avoiding traveling to Brussels. We advise those currently in Brussels to avoid public transport and other crowded areas and to strictly follow local authorities’ orders,” the ministry stated on its website.
According to Nordic Aviation's website, flight JP7175 from Tallinn to Brussels was diverted to Liège airport, approximately 90 kilometers (55 miles) southeast of Brussels. All passengers will be transported to Brussels by bus.
Nordic Aviation is asking that the 41 passengers that were waiting at Brussels International Airport for their flight to Tallinn contact their call center at +372 664 2200 for further instructions. NAG is also in the process of making arrangements to send their evening flight to a nearby airfield in order to bring all passengers waiting for their flight back to Tallinn.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reminds its citizens to carry government-issued photo ID (passport or national ID-card) on them at all times when traveling abroad.
