To date, Estonia has relocated a total of 19 war refugees from Greece. Now the first 16 files have been received from Turkey containing data on individuals needing to be relocated as war refugees. Just as was done with all individuals relocated from Greece, Estonia intends to conduct thorough interviews with the 19 individuals in Turkey in need of international protection.

The Estonian Refugee Council called together representatives from various ministries and state institutions in Tallinn on Thursday in order to review progress made in Estonia in the relocation and resettlement of war refugees as well as new initiatives in the domain of international protection announced by the European Commission last week.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences organized information events in every county in Estonia in October and November in order to familiarize county and municipal representatives with the actions of both the state and NGOs in relation to the relocation and resettlement of war refugees as well as help generate dialogue on the local level regarding possibilities for receiving refugees.

The Ministry of Social Affairs has moved forward with the organization of the reception of war refugees in Estonia. A call for proposals was held in which a partner was found to teach the Estonian language to the individuals granted protection. Partners for the coordination of rental accommodation and providers of support services for the refugees were found in procurement tenders as well. Agreements with all partners are slated to be signed soon.

The Ministry of Education and Research held a conference in Tallinn at the end of April which focused on the integration of pupils with a migrant background into the Estonian education system. According to information provided to the Estonian Refugee Council, the children of the family relocated to Estonia from Greece in March have begun attending kindergarten and school already, and the children of the families relocated in April are still expected to begin kindergarten and school before the end of the current academic year.

Estonia accepted its first seven war refugees from Greece in late March of this year, accepting the next twelve approximately one month later.
