Alcohol consumption down, related deaths the same
While alcohol consumption in Estonia has recently been on the decline, the number of deaths caused by it has remained constant, an overview published by the Estonian Institute for Economic Research showed.
Katrin Karolin of the Ministry of Social Affairs’ public health department said though the decrease in the consumption of alcohol was good news, the situation couldn’t be described as good, as alcohol-related deaths so far hadn’t followed the same trend, ERR’s TV news reported.
Karolin added that Estonia couldn’t accept 57 deaths per 100,000 residents caused by alcohol abuse.
According to the institute’s statement, the reason for the decreased consumption is a change of attitudes in the population. In 2015, Estonians consumed 8.7 litres of alcohol on average.
