Interior ministry yet again confirms Estonian citizenship of Marina Kaljurand
Responding to a request by presidential candidate Marina Kaljurand, the Ministry of the Interior confirmed on Wednesday that Kaljurand is an Estonian citizen by birth. The ministry published registration office documents along with its press release.
Kaljurand’s maternal grandparents, Aleksander and Aleksandra Rajevski, lived in the village of Komarovka in the municipality of Narva. Narva had been Estonian territory since the Treaty of Tartu was signed in 1920.
According to the ministry, the citizenship law of the Republic of Estonia as it entered into effect in 1922 states that all people who lived in territories that became part of Estonia under the treaty were Estonian citizens.
In addition, the citizenship of Aleksander Rajevski can be traced back through different archive entries, for instance birth and marriage certificates.
Based all this information, the ministry confirmed that Kaljurand’s grandparents were indeed Estonian citizens. Therefore their daughter born in 1925, Kaljurand’s mother Veera Rajevskaja, is also an Estonian citizen by birth, and so is her daughter.
An additional document published by the ministry is a registration office entry of a name change. In 1921, Kaljurand's grandparents took on the name Rajevski. The entry shows that the Rajevskis were Estonian citizens.
Also published was a birth registration entry marking the birth of Aleksander and Aleksandra Rajevski’s daughter Maria Rajevski. This document also mentions that both of the parents were born in the municipality of Narva.
The third document published is a registration entry of the marriage of Aleksander Rajevski dated 1939, which also confirms that he was an Estonian citizen, as after 1925 only Estonian citizens were entered into the register at all.
