Seven teams drop out of Estonian military endurance competition, 19 carry on (1)

Six foreign teams as well as the Estonian Women's Voluntary Defence Organization's one team have dropped out of the Admiral Pitka Recon Challenge, the Estonian military endurance competition that began on Tuesday, leaving 19 teams still the running.

As of noon on Friday, the Tartu unit of the Estonian Defence League was in the lead, followed by the Scouts Battalion of the Estonian Defence Forces.

In addition to the Estonian Women's Voluntary Defence Organiztion's (Naiskodukaitse) one team, both teams representing the UK, both teams representing Poland and one team each from Sweden and Lithuania have pulled out of the competition.

26 four-member teams from nine countries began the competition on Tuesday night. Foreign participants in this year's edition of the event included two teams each from Poland, Finland, Denmark and the UK and one each from Sweden, the US, Spain and Lithuania.

 

The Estonian Defence League, the country's volunteer corps, fielded nine teams, while the Naiskodukaitse was represented by one of their own. Estonia was also represented by two teams from the Estonian Defence Forces' Scouts Battalion and one from its Engineer Battalion. In addition, the country's Prison Service put out a team of its own as well as a joint team together with members of the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA).

During four days, participants have to traverse a long-distance course of approximately 120 kilometers, or approximately 75 miles, moving covertly, avoiding opposing force patrols and ambushes as well as solving various tasks requiring military skills at checkpoints.
