Replacement for Kaljulaid at European Court of Auditors to be named this autumn, Parts still front runner
The government has been holding on to Finance Minister Sven Sester’s initial recommendation to appoint Juhan Parts (IRL) Estonia’s representative at the European Court of Auditors for some time now. Presidential candidate Kersti Kaljulaid is about to leave the position.
Kaljulaid’s time in office officially ended in May. But because the Estonian government has been taking its time naming a replacement, Kaljulaid continued at the European Court of Auditors. Now that she is the parties’ presidential candidate and likely to be elected on Monday, the question who will replace her has become a more urgent issue.
Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas (Reform) said on Thursday that the coalition still hadn’t reached an agreement who to appoint in Kaljulaid’s place, but that he hoped a compromise could be found this autumn.
Rõivas said that he would like to see the issue settled once the new president takes office, and expected talks to continue soon, and a solution to be found.
The Reform Party and IRL support Juhan Parts, the Social Democrats as the other junior coalition party so far have disagreed with the choice. Finance Minister Sven Sester (IRL) said in early September that he still considered Parts the best choice for the job.
