Maasikas heads Estonian delegation to meeting of foreign ministers in Riga
As Marina Kaljurand’s successor as Minister of Foreign Affairs has not yet been appointed, diplomat Matti Maasikas, Estonia’s permanent envoy to the European Union, will lead the country’s delegation to the meeting of Baltic and German foreign ministers to take place in Riga on Tuesday.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told BNS on Monday that Maasikas would lead the delegation.
The foreign ministers of the three Baltic states and Germany will discuss the current situation in Europe. Latvia is represented by Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs, Lithuania by Foreign Minister Linas Linkevičius, and Germany by Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand (independent) announced on Friday that she had handed in her letter of resignation in the morning and would run for president, and that Friday was her last working day.
On Monday morning the leadership of the Reform Party confirmed Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas’ choice of Jürgen Ligi (Reform) as the country’s next foreign minister. Maris Lauri (Reform) will take over the Ministry of Education and Research from Ligi. Rõivas is expected to formally ask for their appointment when he meets President Toomas Hendrik Ilves on Monday afternoon.
