Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas said on Friday that the impending visit of German chancellor Angela Merkel demonstrated the closeness of the two countries and the good relations that have prevailed for 25 years.

“Since a summit of European Union leaders is about to take place in Bratislava as early as in mid-September, the future of the European Union will certainly be the main topic of our meeting. The fundamental questions – where Europe is going, what the values are that we cherish and protect, and the choices that we must make in the near future for the sake of a strong and functioning union,” Rõivas said.

He added that the UK’s referendum to leave the EU as well as security issues in the neighborhood if the union would also be important topics.

Roivas has met with Merkel on several occasions and invited her to visit Estonia. They last met in May this year, when Rõivas attended a meeting of the German government in Meseberg at the personal invitation of the chancellor, the first foreign head of government to be extended the honor.

In January this year, Rõivas met Merkel in Wildbad Kreuth near Munich, where matters related to European security were discussed, and Rõivas expressed his thanks to Merkel for her leading role in solving crises in Europe.

Merkel will start her two-day visit to Estonia on Wednesday, Aug. 24. She will meet with Rõivas at Stenbock House at 3:45 p.m., a joint press conference will follow at 4:45 p.m.
