New minister wants to improve private funding of research
Maris Lauri will take over as Minister of Education and Research. Asked by ERR what her priorities were, Lauri said that she wanted to improve the situation concerning the finance of research in Estonia.
Among other things, Lauri said she wanted to improve the private funding of research, as this topic would take a key role in Estonia’s economic development. “It’s of the highest importance that inventions, knowledge, and discoveries make it into production and into business from there,” she said.
Lauri served as Minister of Finance in 2014 and 2015 and has a background in banking and consulting. She began her career working for the Ministry of Finance in the 1990s and can be considered one of Estonia’s policy experts in the area.
Concerning the ministry’s current working areas, Lauri said she wanted to continue her predecessors’ work building the educational system, deal with the question of teachers’ salaries, support scientific and development work, and go on building a system to improve it.
For years state and science institutions have worked on their development strategy based on the principle of investing 1% of GDP into research, but this goal so far hasn’t been reached.
