Latvian PM, government resign
Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma announced her resignation today, bringing the entire government down. She said her government was no longer working well together.
“I see that new ideas are needed, new contributions and energy that can continue to build further on these foundations,” she said, LSM reported.
Straujuma took office in January 2014 when Valdis Dombrovskis resigned following the Riga Maxima disaster. She continued as prime minister after the October 2014 national elections.
Straujuma said last week that a campaign has been launched against her, with LSM reporting that she had been subject to repeated rumors about her imminent resignation, with the rumors emanating from within her own party.
President Raimonds Vejonis said he will talk to all parties before choosing the next prime ministerial candidate.
Since the first national election in Latvia after achieving re-independence, Latvia has had 18 governments, lasting on average 453 days. Estonia is on its 13th government during the same period, lasting on average 649 days each.
