Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas and his Swedish counterpart Stefan Löfen agreed during a meeting in Stockholm on Thursday that the European Union should extend economic sanctions against Russia in June.

Prime Ministers agreed that the EU should tighten the economic measures against Russia, if necessary. “It is evident that Russia is not fulfilling the clauses of Minsk agreements. Until there is no ceasefire in Ukraine, we cannot consider any alleviation of the sanctions,” Rõivas said, adding that Estonia and Sweden have a common understanding of the changed security situation and a consensus on Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.

Rõivas and Löfen also exchanged information and coordinated steps against the impacts of information war, including 'a joint response' to the disinformation distributed by the Russian-controlled media.

The two politicians also discussed bilateral economic relations, safety of the region and migration affairs in the EU.

Sweden is one of the most important trade partners for Estonia and Rõivas expressed hope that the cooperation will intensify, especially in implementing cross-border digital solutions – not just between the two countries, but also in playing a leading role in the European Commission’s Digital Single Market initiative.

Rõivas and his family will also have a private meeting with Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden in Stockholm.
