Indian Court Denies Bail for Estonian Maritime Security Guards
A court in Tamil Nadu state has decided not to free 14 seamen employed by a US company who were picked up in territorial waters on arms violations, Estonian Ambassador to India Viljar Lubi has said.
The prosecutor's office cited national security considerations in arguing that the men should remain in custody, consulate general Margus Särglepp was further quoted by Russian-language ETV news as saying.
Lubi said the men's lawyers are now planning their next move. The next opportunity for release pending trial will arise next week.
The Indian coast guard detained several dozen seamen, including Ukrainian, British and Estonian personnel, aboard the Seaman Guard Ohio, a ship operated by Advanfort, on October 12 near Tuticorin.
