The first US tanks arrived in Riga on Monday, with a total of 3,000 US troops and 120 pieces of heavy equipment also on the way for a 90-day military exercise.

The troops are in the Baltic states as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve, which will take place in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and Poland over the next three months.

Colonel Steven Warren, a spokesman for the Pentagon, said equipment, including helicopters, has began arriving in Riga and it will amount to a brigade combat team, LETA reported.

According to an anonymous US source, the equipment will remain in the Baltic states once the exercise is over and troops have returned to their permanent bases.

Earlier in Riga, US General John O'Connor told AFP the deployment would "demonstrate resolve to President [Vladimir] Putin and Russia that collectively we can come together."
