Raimonds Vējonis, the new president of Latvia, took the oath of office today. He will travel to Estonia on Thursday to pay his first foreign visit.

Vējonis, the fifth president of Latvia since the country regained its independence in 1991, was elected by the Latvian Parliament on June 3.

Vējonis is the former long-serving Latvian minister of the environment and said to be the first green president in the EU.

After assuming office, President Vējonis will shortly travel to Estonia to get acquainted with Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves. He also has a meeting scheduled with Parliament Speaker Eiki Nestor.
