12 new refugees from Greece arrive in Estonia (13)

On Thursday evening, the next 12 refugees to be settled in Estonia under the EU’s migrant relocation program arrived in Estonia from Greece, including a total of three families and one single adult.

A spokesman for the Ministry of the Interior told BNS that the 12 refugees arrived at Tallinn Airport on a regular passenger flight on Thursday, and after meeting their respective prearranged support persons, traveled on to their new homes in Tallinn, Tartu, and Haapsalu.

The group who arrived from Greece included two families from Syria, one family from Iraq, as well as one man from Yemen, according to Ministry of the Interior spokesmen.

The five-member Syrian family was made up of three preschool-aged children, a father who had studied to be a car mechanic, and a mother who had experience working in the medical field.

The three-member family from Syria consisted of one school-aged child, a mother who had been a volunteer teacher, and a father who was a shopkeeper; both parents speak English and had completed some studies a university.

The three-member family from Iraq included one school-aged child; the family father was an electrician.

The single Yemeni man spoke English and had studied at a university in addition to working as a coordinator in a civil society organization.

Officials of the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA), the Estonian Internal Security Service (KaPo) as well as the Ministry of Social Affairs had all conducted interviews with the refugees preceding Estonia’s accepting of them into the country.

Prior to the group that arrived on Thursday, Estonia had accepted its first refugees under the EU’s migrant relocation program approximately one month ago; the first seven refugees to enter the Baltic state arrived on March 29, six of whom settled in Tallinn and one of whom settled in Tartu.
