European Commission auditing measures taken against swine fever in Estonia
Auditors from the European Commission are in Estonia this week to assess prevention measures taken against African swine fever (ASF), which continues to spread across the country.
The goal of the audit is to assess which methods have been deployed in the fight against the spread of ASF in Estonia. The audit will also help analyze whether these methods are efficient and sufficient enough to help prevent the continued spread of the disease in the country's wild boar populations as well as prevent its spread to domestic pigs.
During the week, European Commission officials will meet with the agencies involved in the fight against ASF in Estonia, visit a meat processing plant, a wild game processing center and one small and one large farm each as well as learn about the country's various hunting districts.
A preliminary report will be published within 20 days of the conclusion of this mission, after which competent agencies will be given the opportunity to supplement or correct the report as well as submit its own actions in response to the auditors' observations. Thereafter the final report will be compiled.
