Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Kristen Michal has signed an order to build an additional 948 kilometers, or nearly 600 miles, of base network for high-speed internet in Estonia at a cost of 12.7 million euros.

"By now almost 4,400 kilometers of base network for high-speed internet has been built in Estonia," said Michal. "The base network is a precondition for bringing optical cable to homes and also for providing mobile internet, and the base network will be indispensable upon the arrival of 5G too. In this round, base network coverage will be improved in Hiiumaa, on Muhu Island, the western coast of Lake Peipus and Lääne County."

In this next phase, the base network will be installed between Mustvee-Kallaste-Võnnu-Tartu Anne, Risti-Turba-Kernu, Prillimäe-Juuru-Hageri, Tudu-Roela-Avinurme-Iisaku, Ridase-Pivarootsi-Virtsu-Muhu, Sadala-Torma-Palamuse-Vara-Tartu Raadimõisa, Tuksi-Noarootsi-Vormsi-Linnamäe, Taebla-Palivere as well as the entire island of Hiiumaa.

The eventual goal of the Estwin project, costing approximately 80 million euros, is for 98 percent of households, enterprises and institutions in Estonia to be at a distance of no more than 1.5 kilometers from the new generation broadband network.

To date, approximately 4,400 kilometers of the 6,600-kilometer base network has been built.

The base network is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
