The director of the Information Board, Estonia's foreign intelligence agency, has denied rumors that Georgi-Rene Maksimovski, husband of presidential hopeful Kersti Kaljulaid, has worked or currently works for the Information Board, reported Estonian daily Postimees.

"As a rule, intelligence agencies never comment on whether someone works or does not work for an intelligence agency," explained Information Board Director General Mikk Marran. "But since this is a very sensitive subject for the Estonian state, having to do with the spouse of a potential future Estonian head of state, I am making an exception this time in saying that a person by that name has never worked at the Information Board and does not work there now."

Kaljulaid's spokesman Taavi Linnamäe, partner at the communications firm, stated that Kersti Kaljulaid's husband is an ethnic Estonian and Estonian citizen by birth and has been trained as a communications engineer. Maksimovski, 50, has been issued a permit to access state secrets in connection with his work at the State Infocommunication Foundation (RIKS), which works closely together with all of the national security institutions of Estonia.

Maksimovski was a member of the supervisory board of Haberst Infra from late 2001 until September 2005. According to the commercial register, the company's core business was the sale of communications equipment as well as data processing. Maksimovski went on parental leave in 2009 and has been on unpaid leave after that. His position at RIKS was eliminated in spring of this year, reported Postimees.
