Ryan Heath of Politico.eu on Tuesday named Estonian ambassador Jüri Luik as a potential candidate for the position of Deputy Secretary General of NATO. Luik confirmed that he was one of many candidates.

Heath had asked NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg if he planned to appoint his new deputy before the alliance’s upcoming Warsaw summit. Despite Stoltenberg’s refusal to comment, Heath named U.S. Undersecretary for Arms Control and International Security Rose Gottemoeller and Luik as likely candidates.

Luik confirmed that he was a candidate, but also said that he was only one of many. He expects the decision to be made some time in the coming month.

If they chose him, he would of course be ready to take on the position, Luik added.

Luik has held the positions of Estonian ambassador to Russia and the United States, as well as that of permanent representative at NATO. He served as foreign and defense minister of Estonia in the past. Since August 2015, Luik has headed the International Centre for Defence and Security (ICDS) in Tallinn.
