Continued high winds leave nearly 2,500 Elektrilevi clients without power

More than 600 customers of the distribution system operator Elektrilevi located across several Estonian counties were still without power on Friday morning following outages caused by heavy winds overnight, while thousands more have lost power on Friday as high winds have persisted into the afternoon.

Of the 611 customers without power as of 10:05 a.m. on Friday, 242 were located in Ida-Viru County, 135 in Pärnu County and 87 in Tartu County.

As of 3:06 p.m., 859 clients in Pärnu County, 442 in Harju County, 228 in Jõgeva County, 182 in Tartu County and 178 in Põlva County were without power.

According to the Estonian Weather Service, wind speeds Thursday night heading into Friday reached 14-18 meters per second, or 31-40 miles per hour, across mainland Estonia and 15 meters per second, or 33 miles per hour in coastal areas, with gusts reaching up to 20-25 meters per second, or 45-55 miles per hour.

Heavy winds persisted into Friday afternoon as well.

Elektrilevi reconnected half of the households that had been cut off from the grid by Friday evening

By 7:05 p.m. the number of Elektrilevi clients without electric power had been cut to 1,212 from almost 2,500 shortly after 3 p.m.

The counties affected the most were Tartu County, where 350 customers were without power, and Viljandi County, where the number was 278.
