The Free Party’s leadership discussed the coalition agreement between Center, the Social Democrats, and IRL on Sunday. They are worried about several aspects of the new government’s tax policy plans.

According to Free Party chairman Andres Herkel, the coming government’s tax policy changes will affect middle-class incomes the most. The changes to the tax-free minimum that followed the idea of a progressive income tax as well as dropping previously deductible amounts would affect those incomes negatively, the Free Party finds.

There were topics in the agreement that could be put to the Chancellor of Justice to see if they were even legal, Herkel opined. Examples were the reduction of the tax-deductible amount of home loan interest payments, and dropping joint tax returns for married couples. Here, the question was whether or not such a measure went against people’s reasonable expectations, Herkel said.

Herkel added that the chairmen of the coalition parties had promised that tax issues would be analyzed in greater detail, and that there was room for ‘positive improvements’.

“The Free Party’s leadership recommends to MPs to express that the party remain in opposition, and to vote against granting powers to the government of Jüri Ratas,” Herkel said. At the same time, they were in favor of granting the new government a “quiet Christmas” and time to settle in, Herkel added.

Herkel said that their aim was to meet with the new ministers, hear about their priorities, and make the party’s own positions clear.
