Estonian-led NATO mine countermeasures group arrives in Tallinn
The Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group 1 (SNMCMG1), commanded since June by the Estonian Navy Cmdr. Johan-Elias Seljamaa, arrived in Tallinn for the weekend.
The vessels, which will be staying in Estonia through Monday, will replenish their stores and give crew members a few days' rest after which the unit will be heading out to the Baltic Sea, military spokespeople in Tallinn said.
Seljamaa met with Estonian Minister of Defence Hannes Hanso, Commander of the Defence Forces Lt. Gen. Riho Terras, Commander of the Navy Capt. Sten Sepper and Central Tallinn City District Elder Alar Nääme on Friday.
SNMCMG1 consists of eight vessels, with the German Navy’s support ship FGS Elbe (A511) serving as the flgship. This is the first time an Estonian naval officer has been entrusted with commanding one of the alliance's naval units.
