The Cardinal Secretary of State, Pietro Parolin, is scheduled to visit Estonia next week. He is scheduled to visit Tallinn, Tartu and Valga during his two-day trip.

Over the course of the two-day official visit, which is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Cardinal Pietro Parolin will meet with President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, President of the Riigikogu Eiki Nestor, Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas, and Minister of Foreign Affairs Marina Kaljurand, reported spokespeople for the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Topics to be discussed at these meetings include bilateral relations, the migration crisis, climate, humanitarian and development aid, and the situation in the Mediterranean region. Also to be discussed is the security situation in the region.

An ecumenical prayer will be held at the Cathedral of St. Mary the Virgin in Tallinn together with representatives from the Estonian Council of Churches. The cardinal will also read mass in the Roman Catholic churches of Tallinn and Tartu, and lay a wreath at the Monument to the War of Independnce at Freedom Square in Tallinn.

The cardinal will visit the southern city of Tartu on Wednesday, where he is slated to meet with Mayor Urmas Klaas and Rector of the University of Tartu Volli Kalm, as well as deliver a public lecture. Parolin is also scheduled to visit the Tartu Center for Catholic Education as well as meet with members of the congregation at the Church of the Holy Spirit on the southern border town of Valga.

The Cardinal Secretary of State will be the most senior representative of the Holy See to visit Estonia since the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1993. Cardinal Pietro Parolin has served the Holy See as a diplomat for 20 years.
