Twenty-one MPs from the parliamentary groups of Estonia's Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL) and the Free Party formally nominated Allar Jõks as a candidate for the presidency of Estonia on Friday.

According to spokespeople for the National Electoral Committee, Jõks was nominated by all 14 members of IRL's parliamentary group — Raivo Aeg, Maire Aunaste, Siim Kiisler, Aivar Kokk, Viktoria Ladonskaja, Andres Metsoja, Marko Mihkelson, Kalle Muuli, Mart Nutt, Juhan Parts, Helir-Valdor Seeder, Priit Sibul, Ken-Marti Vaher and Einar Vallbaum — as well as seven members of the eight-member Free Party group — Jüri Adams, Andres Ammas, Krista Aru, Monika Haukanomm, Andres Herkel, Ain Lutsepp and Artur Talvik.

The only member of the Free Party Parliamentary Group not to support Jõks' nomination was Külliki Kübarsepp.

Allar Jõks was born on March 18, 1965, is an Estonian citizen by birth and has confirmed his consent to run for president.

The nomination of candidates for registration for the first round of presidential elections in the Riigikogu opened at 9 a.m. on Thursday. The first candidate to be formally nominated was Center Party's Mailis Reps, who had the support of all 27 members of the party's parliamentary group.

In order to be formally nominated for president, an individual must have the support of at least one fifth of the Riigikogu, or 21 MPs. Each MP can only nominate one candidate for president.

Candidates can be nominated until 6 p.m. on Saturday. The electoral committee will then convene for a meeting on Sunday at 3 p.m. in order to register candidates preceding the first round of voting, which will take place on Monday, Aug. 29 at 1:00 p.m.
