The Estonian Defence Forces have expressed their sympathies to the family of the Finnish peacekeeper who was recently killed during training in Finland ahead of dispatch on the UN peacekeeping mission to Lebanon, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

"Each death of a member of the defense forces is tragic," said spokespeople for the Estonian military headquarters. "The loss is made even sadder by the fact that this was a peacekeeper with whom our units were about to begin service together on the UN mission in Southern Lebanon. Our sympathies go out to the family and fellow soldiers of the member of the defense who lost his life."

A Finnish reservist on pre-mission training for the new rotation of the Finnish crisis management forces heading to Lebanon for the UNIFIL mission was killed in an accident in the Pori Brigrade after being hit by an armored vehicle on Thursday.

Estonian personnel are serving on the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon as a part of a joint Finnish-Irish battalion.

The platoon to make up the next Estonian rotation in Lebnon is currently on pre-mission training in Finland.
