Ilves: Democracy in the EU and its member states works
President Toomas Hendrik Ilves said that Britain’s decision to leave the European Union was “serious” and that the result of the referendum needed to be respected.
Ilves said in an interview with ERR’s radio news on Friday that the referendum made it clear that the European Union was still in the hands of its citizens.
The best thing to do now was to remain calm, deal with the situation, and perhaps also be glad that democracy worked in the EU and its member states.
The next steps were up to the UK, Ilves said. The British government now needed to formally announce its intention to leave, which they hadn’t done yet.
