Minister of Defence report: 70% of conscripts, over 95% of reservists consider mandatory military service necessary
The Minister of Defence has submitted his annual report to the Estonian Government, according to which there are currently 270,806 persons liable to national defense obligations in Estonia, which is approximately 4 percent more than last year.
The total number of males in Estonia reaching 17 years of age continues to decline, however, reported ERR’s television news.
Out of nearly 271,00 current defense force obligors, just 31.4 percent of those whose health was reviewed met minimum health requirements. In contrast, only 29 percent of young men and women joining the service last year did not meet minimum health requirements.
A total of 3,332 of conscripted men and 17 volunteer women entered military service in Estonia last year.
A record-setting total of 81.5 percent of projected numbers participated in continued reservist training exercises in 2015.
According to an opinion survey conducted last year, 70 percent of called-up conscripts and 96 percent of reservists considered mandatory military service necessary.
