EU calls for the release of Eston Kohver in UN
The European Union raised the issue of abducted Estonian security agent Eston Kohver in the UN Human Rights Council on Wednesday, calling on Russia to put an end to violations of international law and to immediately release the Estonian citizen.
The EU representation raised the Kohver issue at the 29th session of the UN Human Rights Council, as part of the agenda during which the most serious human rights violations are discussed.
Last week, the EU made the same statement to the European Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
A statement to the OSCE demanding for the release of Kohver was also made by the United States and Canada.
“Nine months have passed since members of the Russian Security Services abducted Estonian police officer Eston Kohver from Estonian territory. His abduction and continued detention on baseless charges raise serious concerns regarding Russia’s compliance with its international legal obligations,” the statement, which was delivered by the US Ambassador Daniel Brooks Baer to the OSCE Permanent Council in Vienna, said, calling the Russian Federation to release Kohver immediately and to guarantee his safe return to Estonia.
