Jürgen Ligi to be appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs
The leadership of the Reform Party decided on Monday morning to follow the recommendation of Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas (Reform) and confirmed the party's choice of Jürgen Ligi (Reform) as Estonia’s next foreign minister. The post of Minister of Education and Research will go to MP Maris Lauri (Reform).
Prime minister and chairman of the Reform Party, Taavi Rõivas, informed party members on Sunday evening that he intends propose replacing Marina Kaljurand (independent) with Jürgen Ligi to the party leadership on Monday morning.
At its Monday meeting the leadership decided to follow his recommendation and support the prime minister's choice.
Current MP and member of the EU and Economic Affairs committees Maris Lauri will follow Ligi as Minister of Education and Research.
Ligi is an experienced minister, having served as Minister of Defence and later Minister of Finance in Andrus Ansip’s cabinets, and as Minister of Finance as well as Minister of Education and Research in Taavi Rõivas’ cabinets.
Maris Lauri entered politics after a career in banking and consulting. She has served as economic policy advisor to Rõivas’ government as well as Minister of Finance. Tartu's Rait Maruste will take over her seat in the Riigikogu.
