Chairman of the Center Party’s parliamentary group and deputy chairman of the party, Kadri Simson, said after Jüri Ratas’ election on Saturday that the party finally had a leader with national ambitions.

“What has changed is that after more than ten years we finally have a new and energetic chairman, who considers politics on the national level the most important thing. Edgar Savisaar has many virtues and good traits, but lately he has been more of a municipal politician. But the chairman of Estonia’s biggest opposition party has to have national ambitions all the time. I have said before also that Tallinn is very important to us, but the Estonian state is even more important,” Simson said after the election results were announced.

According to Simson, the party chairman has to work to unite the party. Those who threatened to enter the next elections with their own lists and break up the Center Party did not inspire any trust on Saturday, Simson said.

Other parties’ attitude towards the Center Party was shown by the fact that after many years of relative isolation, high-level representatives of other parties attended the congress. Simson added that it might be due to the recent presidential elections that the parties realized that it was possible to make important decisions involving the opposition.

Simson added that a motion of no confidence against Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas (Reform) was to take place on Monday, and that there were people from all six parliamentary groups who felt they needed to support the action.
