Honorary Consul Puts Together 1st Estonian Bobsled Team
A bobsled club founded by Estonia's honorary consul in Monaco will put together Estonia's first national bobsled team that will hope to compete at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018.
Estonia's Honorary Consul in Monaco Mauro Serra will also be the manager of the team, having extensive experience as an athlete in the event in his childhood, sport.err.ee reported today.
He is the man behind the Pragelato Bobsleigh Club, founded in 2005, which has participated in several international competitions.
“Estonia is known as the country of winter sports, which is why I’ve long had the idea to put together an Estonian bobsled team,” Serra said in a press release.
The team will be coached by Eddy Riva, who has shown good results as a member of a bobsled team that has won European and Italian championships. After summer training sessions and a bobsled exam, the team should enter its first competition in Austria in November.
The club aims to put together a team of Estonians and welcomes potential team members with the right athletic build.
Initially, two-person sleds will be crewed, followed by four-person sleds.
The games will take place between February 9-25, 2018. Pyeongchang is hosting after its third consecutive bid for the Olympics, having previously lost the bidding process to Vancouver, Canada, and Sochi, Russia. It been out Munich, Germany, and Annecy, France, in the bidding process in 2011.
It will be the first Winter Olympic Games and the second Olympic Games in South Korea, having hosted the Summer Games in 1988 in Seoul.
