Ilves: United States Is Reason for 1990s Russian Troop Withdrawal and NATO Membership
Speaking after the meeting of US President Barack Obama and the three Baltic presidents, Toomas Hendrik Ilves said the United States has played a great role in security in the region, in the departure of Russian troops in 1994 and NATO membership in 2004.
Ilves said the upcoming NATO Summit should adopt a framework and action plan for military readiness, including boosting the international unit based in Poland, which would increase quick reaction capabilities in the region.
He said today's meeting between the four presidents focused on Ukraine and how to further aid the nation. “Estonia has doubled humanitarian and development aid and is looking for ways to further increase its contribution. But we should not forget the other so called Eastern Partnership nations. States like Georgia and Moldova should not be left alone,” Ilves said.
Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite said Ukraine is not only fighting for its own independence but for everyone.
Russia is threatening the peace of entire Europe, but currently only Ukrainians have had to do the fighting, she said.
