Centre Secretary Appeals to Honor and Conscience of Defectors
The Centre Party members who ditched the party last month may be gone, but their tabs are not closed out. Secretary General Priit Toobal sent a letter to four MPs telling them to pay their back membership dues, with a lecture thrown in.
MEP Vilja Savisaar-Toomast has a debt of 537 euros, according to Toobal, the smallest of the over 8,000 euros owed.
"You talk much about ethics, fairness and values. I hope that these concepts also include payment of debts and obligations," said Toobal in the letter.
MP Rainer Vakra has 2,789 euros outstanding, MEP Siiri Oviir owes 1,610 euros and MP Deniss Boroditsh must pay 3,457 euros.
Toobal said he has no way of forcing the members to pay their debt. According to the party statutes, members of national parliament and European Parliament pay 7 percent of their respective gross MP's salary to the party.
