NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, after a meeting of the North Atlantic Council, said the alliance will reinforce its presence in the Baltic region and eastern Mediterranean.

He said in a press statement on Wednesday that more planes will be in the air, more ships in the water and more readiness on land, but stopped before giving concrete numbers of troops.

Rasmussen said he will not go into operational details, adding that similar moves could be decided on in the coming weeks and months.

Estonian Defense Minister Sven Mikser said at a government press conference on Wednesday that any NATO measures must be serious, long-term and visible.
