The government today announced its decision to back an EU mission to the Central African Republic and will commit up to 55 Defense Forces soldiers in one rotation.

The unit would consist of one infantry platoon and supporting staff, the government press office said.

The next step is for the Ministry of Defense to draw up a draft law on the deployment, which would have to be approved by Parliament.

The Defense Forces sent experts to the troubled African nation at the end of December to assess how Estonia can help the current French and African Union troops in the country.

A conflict between Christians and Muslims broke out in CAR after Michel Djotodia, the nation's first Muslim president, took office in March.
