'Truth Commission' Puts Off Releasing Report
A report from the truth commission, set up by the Centre Party to investigate itself over accusations of illegal campaign financing, is being postponed until the beginning of January, after it was announced last week that the release date would be December 28.
The truth commission hasn't had enough time, the group's boss, Kalle Klandorf, told uudised.err.ee.
Composed entirely of Centre Party members, the commission has so far primarily based its investigation on information accessible to the public. They say they have approached KAPO, although no more information about the case has been given, including the mysterious taped conversation between the party's chairman and KAPO's director.
On December 21, KAPO partially declassified information incriminating Tallinn Mayor and Centre Party Chairman Edgar Savisaar, Deputy Mayor Deniss Boroditsh, and other party members of attempting to fund their political campaign with 1.5 million euros of foreign money, in which case a foreign donator would be influencing the outcome of domestic politics.
Savisaar had proposed to accept the money in cash. Refusing to resign, Savisaar rejected KAPO's accusations, saying that the report is not comprehensive, is out of context and incorrectly translated.
The Centre Party's leadership continues to support Savisaar, despite doubts expressed by at least regional committee. In a show of condemnation, the Social Democratic Party left Tallinn's coalition government.
