President Voices Support for EU Central African Republic Mission
With former and current military brass and politicians from both all sides having stated their opinion on the Cabinet's decision to send troops to the Central African Republic, President Toomas Hendrik Ilves said that it is a question of international responsibility.
"It is a question of our international responsibility that Estonia won't stand idly by when our allies need our help," the President said in a press release today, adding that France, which is leading the mission and already has troops on the ground, is one of the most powerful military forces in Europe, and a member of the UN Security Council.
He said that the defense and foreign ministries must educate the public and Parliament on the reasons of the mission, the dangers faced by the troops and the importance of preparation of the troops.
"The professional training of the Defense Forces unit is extremely important, and helps to mitigate many risks already on the home front,“ said Ilves.
