Marina Kaljurand, the ruling Reform Party's candidate to replace the resigning Keit Pentus-Rosimannus as the nation's foreign minister, said her top priority will be to keep the EU unity intact in the current climate.

“The Prime Minister explained to me why he sees me in the position of the foreign minister. He said I have lengthy experience in the field of foreign policy. I have been at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for 24 years, served as an ambassador in many countries – I guess this is what Estonia needed right now,” Kaljurand told ETV.

“I can tell you that Taavi Rõivas is the first politician who has bothered to explain to me why I would be a better minister than a diplomat,” she said.

She said she could only accept the offer as she shares the aims, values and principles of the Reform Party. She is not a party member, but she is believed to be considering signing up for the Reform Party.

Kaljurand added that all ministers are different with different styles, but there is one common Estonian foreign policy, which the foreign minister helps to implement, adding that the questions and topics, which she will have to tackle, are the same as under Pentus-Rosimannus.

“The European Union currently is united and Estonian diplomats, who have been brave and vocal in protecting Estonia's positions in the EU, are a major reason why the European Union is united and can speak as one,” she said, adding that her first task will be to keep that unity going, and also strengthening the trans-Atlantic bond.

She added that questions such as Russian Federation aggression and aiding Ukraine are all tied to that unity.
