New foreign minister hopes to meet Russian colleague soon
The newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs Marina Kaljurand told ERR that there are many foreign policy topics that need to be explained better in Estonia, such as the migration crisis and European solidarity, but also Greek crisis.
Kaljurand, who took an oath in front of the Parliament on Thursday, also commented on the relationship between Estonia and Russia and expressed hope that she will have a chance to meet with her Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov soon.
Kaljurand said that should that happen, she will raise the question of abducted Estonian agent Eston Kohver, as well as the border treaty ratification.
Kaljurand also aims to continue with diplomatic pressure on India to release detained Estonian anti-piracy crew, held in India for almost two years for alleged arms violations in Indian territorial waters.
Kaljurand will pay her first foreign visit as a minister to Brussels, but she has already held telephone conversations with her counterparts in Riga, Vilnius and Helsinki.
Kaljurand was Estonian ambassador to Russian Federation from 2005-2008 and speaks fluent Russian.
