Reinsalu to resign as IRL chairman
IRL Chairman Urmas Reinsalu said he will step down after the party's congress in June. The party was the biggest loser in the recent general election, losing nine seats in the Parliament.
“I think there are no eternal party heads and I plan to support the new chairman, who will be elected at the next party congress, just like Mart Laar once backed me,” Reinsalu said.
“A party chairman is responsible for election results and ambitions were lower than I would have liked,” he added.
Reinsalu did not say who his preferred successor would be.
IRL won 14 seats in the March 1 election, collecting 13.7 percent of the vote. In 2011, the last general election, those figures were 23 and 20.5 percent respectively.
