Six election unions running for local governments in Harju County turned out at Tallinn's Freedom Square today to protest the legality of salting election lists with big names to attract voters.

Participants signed a petition to ban so-called decoy candidates - high-level politicians tapped to run for local office for the sole purpose of attracting votes.

The election coalitions said the use of such candidates deceives voters and distorts election results. Current laws also hamper the chances of candidates who genuinely want to be involved in leading municipalities, the coalitions said.

Out of 101 MPs, 93 and a number of government ministers have registered as candidates for the upcoming local elections, but few expecting them to climb down the political ladder to take seats on municipality and city councils.
