Stubb: Finland Unlikely to Join NATO Soon (5)
Speaking at a joint press conference with his Estonian counterpart Taavi Rõivas today, Stubb said Estonia’s membership of the alliance has increased security in the Baltic Sea region, but Finland will probably not join NATO during his government, uudised.err.ee reported.
Commenting on the recent criticism leveled at Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves by Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, Stubb said that all ministers take responsibility for their words, adding that he considers Ilves a leading expert on security and is in close contact with him.
Tuomioja recently contested the view expressed by Ilves that the events in Ukraine are reminiscent of the events in Estonia in 1919 and 1940.
The prime ministers also said the governments of both countries should continue with the Balticconnector gas pipeline and said they hope the European Commission will also signal its support for the project.
