Estcoy Have Banner Week in Afghanistan
Estonian infantry in the Estcoy-13 company in Afghanistan found 10 IEDs and 17 caches of munitions during a 10-day operation.
The unit's commander, Maj. Kaido Kivistik said that based on the effectiveness of the improvised explosive devices, the find could be seen as saving real lives.
"If we convert the illegal munitions into human lives, we were able to save likely the life and health of a hundred people, which is a noteworthy result," said Kivistik.
His superior at the Task Force Helmand level, Brig. Gen. Patrick Sanders, singled out Estcoy for praise in a letter to ISAF Regional Command Southwest commander Major General John A. Toolan for making key discoveries almost every day that week.
Kivistik said the caches contained 52 weight-sensitive triggers for IEDs, components, one RPG launcher, small arms and ammunition.
The ten-day operation was intended to clear the highway between Loy Mandah and Lashkar Gah of improvised explosive devices.
Since deployment in November, Estcoy-13 has found 24 caches and found and disarmed 53 IEDs.
