Cables: Estonia Refused Residence to Guantanamo Prisoners
Estonia repeatedly rejected the United States' year-long effort to take in former prisoners from Guantanamo Bay, diplomatic cables show, countering Foreign Minister Urmas Paet's claims to the public that there have been no specific requests.
In 2008, the Estonian government refused to take a Palestinian national under its wing. A year later, three other applications were turned down.
The US had offered to pay 62,600 euros per person to help cover housing and living costs, according to Postimees, which obtained the Wikileaks documents, detailing US State Department and Tallinn embassy dialogue, from its Norwegian affiliate newspaper, Aftenposten.
Located in Cuba, the Guantanamo Bay prison was set up in 2002 by the Bush Administration to hold terrorism suspects from the war in Afghanistan and Iraq.
