Estonia has over 2,000 soldiers, police and rescue officers, officials, diplomats and health experts who between 2003-2014 participated in Allied operations in Afghanistan. The Estonian War Museum and NGO Fotokeskkond called for those people to submit the photos they took during their tours to a competition. Over the next few days ERR News will publish a selection of the best pictures, introducing viewers to the life and experiences of Estonian veterans.

All 625 entries will be added to the Estonian War Museum's photo collection and have been compiled into an exhibition. Central to the display is the sauna, built and used by Estonian soldiers in the Camp Bastion military base, Afghanistan. The sauna was brought back to Estonia and set up in the War Museum, complete with its original terrace. The display also features vehicles and equipment used during the operations.

The winners of the competition are awarded by Minister of Defense Sven Mikser during the opening of the exhibition today, as Estonia celebrates its third ever Veterans Day.

The first prize went to lieutenant Kristel Maasikmets for her photo of Estcoy-14 fighters at a checkpoint in Helmand province.
