Estonia elected vice president of ECOSOC
Estonia was elected vice president of the United Nations’ Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) last week. The country will be represented by the Permanent Representative of Estonia to the UN, Sven Jürgenson.
ECOSOC constitutes one of the principal organs of the UN. It is responsible for coordinating the economic, social and related work of 14 UN specialized agencies, their functional commissions and five regional commissions. It has 54 members.
According to Jürgenson, Estonia’s membership and vice-presidential role will increase the country’s international influence and intensify its relations with developing countries.
Jürgenson said that it enables Estonia to actively stand up for human rights, as well as for good governance and internet freedom.
Estonia’s membership will last until the end of 2017.
