The deadline for setting up candidates for the March 1 parliamentary elections dropped on Thursday evening with 10 political parties and 13 independent candidates set to run.

The ten parties were: the Reform Party, the Center Party, IRL, the Social Democrats, the Conservative People's Party and the Free Party, all with the maximum allowed 125 names. The Greens named 40 candidates, the Party of People's Unity 36, the United Left Party 25 and the Independence Party 12.

The number of independent candidates dropped from 32 four years ago to just 13 this time around. The most notable lone candidates are Meelis Kaldalu, who stole a computer from the election office in an failed attempt to prove flaws in the voting system, and Svetlana Ivnitskaja, who promised a Swiss-style 500-euro minimum income for each EU citizen, among other similar promises at the European Parliament elections last May.

A few changes could still take place as the candidates will be reviewed next week, after which every candidate has until January 23 to drop out.
